One of the best ways on the internet to vote for valuable information an someone else’s website is to provide your own visitors with a link to that content on another site. Links are the blood of the web and are also the main reason it is called a net.

Links have three uses for the search engines:

Links help the search engine spiders to sniff out and index other sites and their content.  Links to a site and to a webpage is interpreted as a voting for the quality of a site.

the anchor text in the link is taken as  describing the relevant content to be that was found within the site the link is going to.

Until a couple of years ao webmaster would often email other webmasters to ask for an exchange of links, called swapping links. This mechanism was seen as a way of mutually growing related sites through link exchange, a win win situation as both websites would benefit from such a two-way link exchange.

reciprocal links are still a bit useful if looked at from the view  of direct traffic generation as long as the link to your webpages are not buried among long pages of links to other websites. Of course, only one way backlinks are of value to a website in the google dominated internet.

lots of different link exchange schemes and programs have been made to automate link exchanges, making it a lot easier to get lots of inbound links and to keep track of the links and ensure they remain in place. People easily forget what they have promised to do and to keep. The issue is that some of these automated link exchanges are automated and go against Google’s TOS, and could well get you banned if you use them.

I advise to avoid of any of these awful link schemes, and to only use a reputable link exchange directory, such as IBL Builder.  IBL Builder is a link exchange directory.  

It uses a clever credit system. You offer links to other sites in the directory, and earn credits. You can then spend those credits requesting inbound links from websites that you have chosen in their link directory.

Some methods of obtaining backlinks are seen as ok even though the reality is otherwise.  You can comment on blogs for example.  But how valid is that?  That is surely just spamming blogs for links?  IBL Builder works within Google’s TOS and also is not spamming, it is a wonderful way to find gold dust backlinks to your website.
